But when you have been working your hardest for a long time and keep getting passed up for promotions, it is incredibly frustrating. While a small promotion might not seem like a big deal, it can be. Here are some things to understand about getting passed up by promotions and how to get the next one: Reasons You Were Passed Up The first thing to understand is what might have come in the way of your promotion. While these arent necessarily all true, it helps to know the common reasons people are passed up for a promotion: Lack of Proper Skills Just because you have the necessary skills for the job you currently have, doesnt mean you have the skills needed for the promotion. Some promotions require certain skills you either dont possess or havent proven. If you know you have excellent oral communication, analytical or management skills needed for a promotion, prove it to your superior. You Are Too Defensive Being promoted also means you need to be a team player and take feedback well. If you have a tendency to become overly defensive when someone tries to help you perform your work performance, it can be hurting you when it comes time for management to hand out promotions. No matter what your job is or what level in the company you are, you need to be able to take constructive feedback. You Dont Like Your Company or Job Are you overly negative at work? Does your boss overhear you complaining about your job or the company? If so, it is likely hurting your chances to be elected a promotion. They arent going to promote and give more responsibility to someone that isnt happy at their job. Dealing with Setbacks If you are denied a promotion, take some time to reflect on the reasons this might be. Be honest with yourself and make a list of areas you can improve. Figure out exactly what it is you want from your job and your company, and if you still want that promotion, develop a plan of attack. Improving Your Chances for a 2014 Promotion Now that you know what you want, it is time to improve your chances for the next round of promotions. Start by showing initiative and taking charge, instead of waiting to be given instructions by your supervisor. This shows great management potential, if that is the direction you are headed. Having a strong work ethic, arriving on time, not calling in frequently and truly being happy with your job is also good thing to show your supervisor. Lastly, always remain professional and stay out of office politics. There is no need to get caught up in it when youre serious about your job.
